Friday 22 nd February 2019 – Embargoed 0500 GMT on Saturday 23 rd February
Strategic Marine Vietnam and Pentland Ferries proudly announce the successful launch of “ALFRED” Hull 765.
Pentland Ferries brand new Yanmar powered RO/PAX Ferry will service the Orkney Islands to and from the main land of Scotland, UK.
At 15:00 hrs on Friday Feb 22, many well-wishers, invited guests, shipyard workers and Pentland Ferries team members lined the slipway as the completed hull of the vessel rolled down the slipway and into the warm waters of where the vessel was built, this being Vung Tau, Vietnam.
Since the keel was laid, approx. 1,050 tonnes of Steel Hull and Aluminium Super Structure have been welded together in a large undercovered workshop to create this Flag Ship vessel for Pentland Ferries operations.
The completed hull already contains all the ship’s main state of the art machinery including its efficient and environmentally friendly propulsion system.
The launch marks Strategic Marine’s place in a long and historic line of ships to be constructed at the Vung Tau, Vietnam ship yard situated within 2 hours drive from Ho Chi Minh City International airport.
Altogether Alfred will carry 430 passengers in comfort and up to 12 x Semi Trailers / Lorries with 54 cars or 98 cars in total.
The ship’s twin hulls have been hydro-dynamically optimized to smooth out the sail across the stretch of water to Orkney that at times can become very rough.
The final fit out of the modern interior will take place prior to a complete series of sea trials in Vietnam before Pentland Ferries crew sail Alfred back to home base in Scotland.
Mr. Joseph Azran Alemberg (SMV COO) stated “Today’s a big day for Strategic Marine Vietnam and a proud moment for everyone that contributed to the vessel build. Strategic Marine and Pentland Ferries worked tirelessly in cooperation to bringing the project to fruition.”
Mr. Andrew Banks (Pentland Ferries Owner) stated “We are delighted to announce Alfred has been launched successfully and we are looking forward to getting the ship home to Orkney and into service. The naming ceremony in Vietnam was performed by Louise Berston, Andrew and Susan’s daughter in law, with a bottle of OVD rum which was Alfie’s (the Alfred’s namesake) favourite tipple. The Alfred was proudly flying the Orkney Flag along with the UK ensign at its launch”
